Water levels on the Paraguay River, a crucial economic lifeline for the region, have fallen 89 centimetres below the benchmark metre at the river port of the capital city Asunción, marking the lowest level recorded in 120 years, according to Paraguay's Department of Meteorology and Hydrology.
Commerce was disrupted on the central waterway and created hazards for local transport, offering a grim warning for other parts of the world.
