Forest fires struck in more European countries than ever before. Last year, wildfires destroyed nearly 178,000 hectares of land across the continent. That’s according to a new report by the EU Commission, which says it’s having to spend more to protect our countryside.

Wildfires are still raging in the Amazon rainforest. 12 million hectares have burnt so far, three times more than last year. In Bolivia, over 5,000 people are fighting the blaze, but it is still out of control. Euronews Aid Zone reporter Monica Pinna recently returned from the affected area.

Greek island of Zakynthos ravaged by large forest fires
52 fire engines and crews, 171 firefighters in total, as well as nine groups of firemen on foot, two firefighting helicopters and four water-dropping helicopters assisted by 13 water-tanker trucks and digging machinery are battling the blaze.
