President Juncker agrees on right to food equality

Food quality was on the menu in Brussels on Thursday, as Slovakian prime minister Robert Fico met with European Commission president Jean-Claude Juncker.

Juncker agreed with Fico that Slovaks and other eastern Europeans have the right to equal food quality.

Facing the press after their bilateral meeting, Jucker said: “Slovak people, Slovak consumers, they have the absolute right to have the same quality of products. We are not dealing with matter with a benign, neglect (sic) way. It’s also a matter where we have to prove as a Commission, as EU that there are no second category citizens in Europe. All the citizens have equal rights because they have equal dignity”.

Leaders of the Visegrad group – Slovakia, Poland, Czech Republic and Hungary- say their citizens have been discriminated against by food companies selling inferior products.

The Hungarian Food Safety office say firms have advertised food as the same as in western nations, but used lower quality ingredients.
