The sun also rises in Murmansk

Local residents in the northern Russian port city of Murmansk gathered on a hilltop to watch the sunrise for the first time in over a month on Thursday.

Sub-zero temperatures didn't stop crowds gathering to celebrate the end of 24-hour darkness, which started in early December.

Crowds of local residents gathered on top of a hill to watch the sun emerge from the horizon on Thursday, marking the end of the polar night.

The annual sight of the first sunrise on the aptly named "sunny mountain" has brought locals together since 2007.

The first rays of light showed at 12.39 pm as people cheered and took photographs.

Daylight doesn't last long, however, with darkness falling around 34 minutes later.
