ADVERTISEMENTWhat do you want out of this divorce? The question Britain’s Brexit Secretary David Davis has been facing in Strasbourg, as he seeks to lay foundations ahead of the formal triggering of Article 50.
“One of the things we are very clear about, we are going to deal with this systematically,” said Davis.
“There are issues relating to migration, issues relating to security, issues relating to law, issues relating to the market and all of those, before we initiate any proper negotiation, all of those,” he continued.
“We will be very clear about how it will be worked out, all of those implications both for ourselves and as far as we can for the EU.”
The European Parliament’s chief negotiator Guy Verhofstadt is among the officials Davis has been meeting in Strasbourg. Davis has reportedly described the talks as a “good start.”
“The Brexit case is extremely important to have a dialogue to talk to each other because we have a common responsibility. But we need from the British side the clear orientation,” saud Manfred Weber, German Conservative MEP.
“For the moment, nothing is clear. I have got no further information about what the British government wants to achieve, what Brexit really means. That is what they have to clarify.”
Meanwhile, the UK Independence Party is facing European Parliament allegations that it misspent thousands of euros of EU funding on campaign work, including for Brexit.
Britain’s Electoral Commission is probing if there’s been any breach of UK election laws.
