The United Kingdom will start the process of leaving the European Union on the 29th of March. From that day London and Brussels will have two years to negotiate terms.
Officially during this time Britain has no right to launch any substantial trade talks with non-EU states. However it can have general discussions with other countries, but any potential trade partners, including the US might first want to wait for the Brexit terms to be clear before they start any negotiations.
