Iranians and Israelis both appeared to respect US President Donald Trump's brokered ceasefire later on Tuesday, after Trump accused both sides of violating the deal.

Tuesday morning began with widespread confusion over when the ceasefire deal, first announced by US President Donald Trump the night prior, would take effect.

The Israeli defence minister accused Iran of breaking the ceasefire deal and announced that the military would retaliate, shortly after Iran fired two missiles into Israel— apparently violating the fragile ceasefire that had taken hold just hours earlier.

Israel's government announced it had agreed to a ceasefire on Tuesday morning, hours after trading a barrage of overnight strikes with Iran.

Iranian state media later announced that a ceasefire was indeed in effect, with Trump delcaring the ceasefire had "taken effect" shortly after 7am CET.

Strikes killed nine in Iran and five in Israel in the early hours of Tuesday, after the ceasefire agreement was announced but had not yet taken hold.

When an Israeli retaliation appeared under way Trump reacted furiously, accusing both sides of losing sight of their aims, after which the fragile ceasefire appeared to hold.

Ceasefire a mixed blessing in Tehran?

Euronews Farsi desk has been monitoring social media from Tehran and observing some mixed responses to the ceasefire. On the one hand the intensity of Israeli attacks — especially in Tehran — has been so severe that the ceasefire appears to come as a relief for many. These include people who are forced to return to Tehran to make a living, and who, if they don’t work, have no means to feed themselves or their families. Naturally, they would prefer not to be under relentless bombardment and to endure less stress.

On the other there are early rumours of arrests of spies and saboteurs by the regime, and arbitrary use of the death penalty.

Trump's call with Netanyahu, seeking end of Israeli attacks

US President Donald Trump called Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, asking him to “not carry out an attack in Iran at all,” an Israeli intelligence source told Euronews' Eleonora Vasques on condition of anonymity.

Information on the call was also reported by Associated Press and the US press agency Axios.

“Netanyahu told Trump that he could not cancel the strike and that some response was needed to Iran’s violation of the ceasefire,” the source said.

The Prime Minister ultimately chose to significantly scale back the strike, cancelling multiple planned attacks and authorising only one target, according to the source.

Ceasefire should be 'turning point' for the region, says Kaja Kallas

The tentative ceasefire between Israel and Iran should be a "turning point" for the entire Middle East, High Representative Kaja Kallas has just said, promising to work with "all sides" to ensure the cessation of hostilities becomes permanent.

"The announced reprieve in fighting between Israel and Iran is good news but remains fragile," Kallas said on social media.

"All sides should stand by this and refrain from further violence. All further escalation must be avoided."

The EU's foreign policy chief also expressed her solidarity with "all those affected" by the conflict, including residents of Qatar who were the target of retaliatory strikes from Iran against the United States. No injuries were reported after the attack.

"This is the moment to return to the negotiating table," Kallas said.

Canadian PM urges Israel and Iran to respect ceasefire and achieve 'diplomatic resolution'

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who was in Brussels yesterday, has welcomed the tentative ceasefire between Israel and Iran, even if its implementation appears fragile and uncertain.

"With the reported reduction in Iran’s nuclear capacity, we urge parties to adhere to the ceasefire, return to the table and negotiate a diplomatic resolution," Carney said on social media.

In his message, Carney made a link with Israel's war on Gaza, which has triggered a humanitarian catastrophe. Earlier this month, Canada and the UK jointly sanction two hard-line members of the Israeli government for repeatedly "inciting violence against Palestinians".

"That resolution should lead to a broader de-escalation of hostilities in the Middle East, including a ceasefire in Gaza," Carney said. "We remain in close coordination with our allies to support stability and the safety of civilians across the region."

EU calls again for 'maximum restraint' as it warns of 'fragile' ceasefire

The European Commission has called on Israel and Iran to show "maximum restraint" to guarantee the ceasefire announced by Donald Trump. The appeal comes a few hours after Iran fired two missiles into Israel, and Israel vowed to retaliate with force, an escalation that appeared to violate the terms that Trump had unveiled to end hostilities.

"The reported missile fire underscores just how fragile this ceasefire potentially remains. We urge all parties to show maximum restraint," a Commission spokesperson said on Tuesday.

The spokesperson also warned about the possible "spill-over" that the Iran-Israel conflict could have across the Middle East. "We're sending clear messages, also to Iran, that the escalation of this war is in the benefit of no one," the spokesperson said.

Trump: 'I gotta get Israel to calm down'

Some more details on those comments made by US President Donald Trump, who spoke to reporters before flying to the Hague.

Israel “unloaded” right after agreeing to the deal, Trump said, appearing to refer to Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz's commitment to "forcefully respond" as Iran lanched two missiles toward Israel this morning after the ceasefire had taken hold. Iran has denied it launched further attacks.

“Israel, as soon as we made the deal, they came out and they dropped a load of bombs, the likes of which I’ve never seen before, the biggest load that we’ve seen."

They didn’t have to unload,” Trump said.

“Now Israel is going out [to strike Iran] because of one rocket that didn’t land anywhere."

“We basically have two countries that have been fighting so long and so hard that they don’t know what the f*** they’re doing.”

“I gotta get Israel to calm down now,” he says. “I’m gonna see if I can stop it.”

A short time later, he postd on his Truth Social platform telling Israel: "Do not drop those bombs. If you do it is a major violation."

Qatar condemns Iranian attack on US air base, vows diplomatic response

As we wait for more comments from Trump on the ceasefire between Israel and Iran, Qatar has condemned Iran’s missile strike on the Al Udeid Air Base, a key American military facility in the Gulf state.

“We were surprised by the attack on the military base — attacking Qatar is unacceptable,” said Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani on Tuesday.

Al Thani said the strike had left a “scar” on Qatar’s relationship with Tehran but ruled out escalating the situation militarily. Instead, he said Doha would pursue legal action and diplomacy in response.

Qatar intercepted all but one of the missiles, the Prime Minister confirmed, with the last missile landing in an uninhabited area.

Israel’s opposition leader says most of Iran’s enriched uranium destroyed

Israeli opposition leader Yair Lapid has told British lawmakers he believes the majority of Iran’s enriched uranium stockpile was destroyed in recent Israeli and US strikes — though not all of it.

“We think at least the majority of it might be gone, but not everything,” Lapid said during a session with the UK Parliament’s Foreign Affairs Committee.

He added that Iran’s nuclear programme has been “significantly damaged” and set back, though the full extent remains unclear.

Lapid also suggested Iran may have smuggled some of its uranium stockpile out of targeted facilities.

“There are only a limited number of places they can smuggle the uranium to,” he told lawmakers. “You don’t take it in a suitcase and put it at home until the fire stops.”

What's happened in the last few hours?

This morning has seen some dramatic updates on the conflict in the Middle East, including a ceasefire deal Israel accused Iran of breaking just hours later.

Here's a timeline of this morning so far:

  • At 07:08 CET, Donald Trump announced on social media that a ceasefire between Israel and Iran was now in effect.
  • About an hour later, Israel confirmed it had accepted the US-brokered deal. Iran had earlier signalled it would halt attacks if Israel did the same.
  • Israel then reported that missiles were launched from Iran towards northern Israel around 09:30. The military says they were intercepted.
  • Iran denies launching any missiles and has rejected accusations of violating the ceasefire. Israel, however, has vowed to "respond with force."

The ceasefire follows a night of fighting in which Iranian state media said Israeli missiles struck Tehran and other cities, killing nine people. The IDF said a nuclear scientist was also killed.

In Israel, five people were killed and 22 injured in the southern city of Beersheba following Iranian missile attacks overnight.

Beersheba buildings damaged as residents evacuate

Israeli police say at least three residential buildings in the southern city of Beersheba were damaged in this morning’s missile barrage from Iran.

Images from the scene show the shells of burned-out cars littering the streets, while broken glass and rubble cover the surrounding area.

Hundreds of emergency workers have gathered to search for anyone who may still be trapped inside the damaged buildings.

Police say the impact of the strikes was so powerful that some residents were injured despite sheltering inside reinforced safe rooms — small, blast-resistant spaces required in most Israeli homes. These rooms are designed to protect against rockets and shrapnel but are not built to withstand direct hits from ballistic missiles.

Israel’s airports have been mostly closed since the outbreak of hostilities with Iran, though a small number of emergency flights had resumed operations in recent days.

The latest closure began around three hours ago, when the missile attacks triggered new restrictions on air travel. Emergency flights are now permitted to land and depart.
