Video. Blatten remains evacuated as Birch Glacier continues to break apart

Updated:

A section of the Birch Glacier in the Lötschental remains unstable following a major landslide, with millions of cubic metres of debris pushing the ice dangerously downhill.

Repeated break-offs from the glacier above the evacuated village of Blatten continue to pose a serious threat.

Experts warn that further collapses could trigger debris flows or dam the River Lonza.

Authorities have declared a "special situation" on Wednesday and urged residents to stay away from the area.

Emergency teams plan to install additional monitoring systems in the coming days to better assess the risks.

While some officials remain hopeful, there is still no clear timeline for the village’s safe return.
