The victim Emmanuel Chidi Namdi was attacked in the small town of Fermo after coming to his wife’s defence. His partner told police that her husband was beaten unconscious by a man wielding a road-sign pole.

The couple had arrived in Italy by boat from Libya last year after escaping an attack by Islamist militant group Boko Haram in Nigeria.

The killing sent shockwaves throughout Italy and senior politicians denounced the hate crime. Prime Minister Matteo Renzi tweeted, “The government today is in Fermo, alongside father Vinicio and the local institutions in memory of Emmanuel. Against hatred, racism and violence.”

At a vigil on Wednesday, words were little consolation to his widow, who asked “Why do you leave me in this wicked world?”
