Europe 2 degrees warmer than average, widespread flooding and alpine snowfall. Antarctica 2nd lowest sea ice coverage on record

January 2018 was warmer than usual across Europe, and far colder than average in southern Russia, central Asia , and across the southern and eastern USA.

Data shows last month to be two degrees warmer than average in Europe; the fourth warmest January on record.

The warm temperatures were combined with high precipitation in many parts of Europe – with France experiencing widespread flooding, while the Alpine regions saw heavy snowfall.

In the southern hemisphere it was a different picture – eastern Australia & southern Africa saw very dry conditions last month.

Sea ice coverage was below average at both poles, with Antarctica at its second lowest level on record.
