Greece expects boost in tourist numbers

The number of tourists heading to Greece for their holidays is expected to rise this year, giving some financial life blood to the debt-ridden nation.

Tourism accounts for about 18 percent of Greece’s GDP and provides about one in every five jobs.

But figures from Eurostat show 32.9% of the EU population cannot afford to take a one-week annual holiday away from home, and more than half of Greeks can not afford a holiday. At the same time, Greece is one of the most popular holiday destinations.

Some 26 million visitors are expected this year. That’s up from last year when the migrant crisis affected tourism, especially to the Greek islands.

Cruise passengers will further boost the number of visitors this year.
