Brussels have joined other capitals around the world in paying a silent tribute to the slain Charlie Hebdo journalists.

Officials from the major EU institution stood silent outside their offices at noon, reflecting on Wednesday’s assault on freedom of expression.

“We will never give up the values of freedom of the press and of expression, tolerance and mutual respect,” said European Parliament president Martin Schulz, who led a ceremony attended by MEPs and their staff.

Many of them carried posters with the slogan “Je Suis Charlie” (I am Charlie) in a show of solidarity with the French satirical weekly.
