The healthy egg you may be about to eat can indeed become toxic.

Don´t panic: not its yolk. But its shell.

Membranes attached to the mineral shell are full of proteins and acids that quickly rot after the egg has been used. Eggshells are indeed consider a hazardous waste in Europe; they have to be treated by specialized companies at high costs.

But this may soon change. Researchers are working on a prototype to easily recycle egg membranes into cosmetic products and dietary supplements. Tas Orbán, managing director from an Hungarian small & medium enterprise processing around 15 million eggs per year, takes you to the future possibilites of eggshell recycling.
