The blaze in the eastern town of Thusis, which was reported just after midnight, "entirely burned" a building that housed a restaurant and residential flats, police for the canton of Graubünden said in a statement.

"The stairwell collapsed, so the roof of the building had to be opened with a crane," it said.

Two of the injured are in serious condition, police said. Six other people escaped the building without injury.
