Two Norwegian telecoms companies have called off plans to merge their Danish units which would have created the biggest telecoms provider in Denmark.

Back in December TeliaSonera and Telenor said they had agreed to combine their danish mobile businesses to boost margins in a market described as extremely tough.

But the planned deal unsettled the European Union’s competition regulator as the number of players would have been reduced from four to three.

Both companies say they have been unable to agree terms with the European Commission for a deal they say would have created a robust mobile operator in Denmark.
