Decorative chandeliers installed at a busy Mexico City subway station ahead of the 2026 World Cup have sparked a wave of memes and mixed reactions from commuters.
In downtown Mexico City renovations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup have left commuters surprised over new ornate lamps and chandeliers.
The construction taking place at Hidalgo station has resulted in a wave of online memes about the new look.
This fast-paced busy subway station has crowds struck by the contrast of the elegant lamps and chandeliers against daily rush-hour.
Other passengers have compared the station to the set of period dramas.
Student Montserrat Cardenas said: “I find them really exaggerated, to be honest, and each station has a different concept.
“I think it's quite ridiculous that they want to do everything at the last minute.
“I think my favourite [meme] is the one - I don't know if you've seen it - with the Beauty and the Beast walking right down this hallway."
The remodelling of the station specifically to line two has created divided opinion with commuters on the aesthetic upgrade.
Marketing specialist Marisol Venegas said: "There's also a certain sense of social fatigue because these renovations are being done for the World Cup. “However, we also need other things that are important, not just aesthetics."
The chandeliers have turned Hidalgo station from an ordinary subway station into one of Mexico City’s viral attractions.
