A footballer had a night he will never forget after scoring two goals and then being subbed so he could watch the birth of his son.

Ryan Colclough had already scored once when his team Wigan Athletic – who play in the third tier of English football – went in for the half-time break, 2-0 up against opponents Doncaster Rovers.

It was during the pause in play that Colclough learned his partner had gone into labour.

Colclough emerged for the second half, scored again, to put his side 3-0 up, before being subbed three minutes later.

He ran down the tunnel and off to hospital.

Colclough got there in time for the birth of his son – so quickly he was pictured holding the baby in his full football kit.

The winger later wrote on Twitter: “What a great result and team effort from all the boys! I’m so happy to mark the birth of my second son with two goals and with the win he made it a hat-trick for me!”
