The trial has begun of a German pharmacist, accused by the prosecution of murdering patients in the “ice-cold pursuit of profit”, though investigators have said they do not yet know what his motivations were.

The defendent, who can’t be named for legal reasons, allegedly diluted the medication of about a thousand cancer patients between 2012 and 2016. Many of them were in court for the hearing.

One of the joint plaintiffs, Karina Lischenhagen, explained:

“In addition to this enormity of what he’s done, it’s hurtful that he’s silent about the whole thing, that he doesn’t comment on it in any way, and he doesn’t help to clarify to the people affected whether or not they received adulterated medications.”

The pharmacy in the city of Bottrop has a new owner, but it’ll be a long time before the victims regain their trust in the medical profession.
