At least 18 people are now confirmed dead and 10 others wounded after a suspected terror attack in Burkina Faso.

The assault took place in the capital Ouagadougou and saw gunmen open fire on diners outside a restaurant. For the moment, no group has claimed responsibility though suspicion has fallen on jihadist groups.

Authorities say the attack is now over, with the two assailants dead.

One woman who heard the attack said: “We’d finished eating and left the restaurant. We were waiting outside and then we heard the shootings. After, I didn’t see anything.”

Another man said: “Some were telling us that they were robbed and then thrown out, and then we saw the events. It’s worst than we thought.”

The restaurant was a popular haunt among expats and both French and Turkish nationals are confirmed to be among the dead

Footage showed security forces exchanging heavy gunfire with the attackers who were believed to be holding hostages.
