Austria has banned Turkish economy minister Nihat Zeybekci from attending an event to mark the anniversary of a failed coup.

Austrian foreign minister Sebastian Kurz made the decision on the basis that the event presented a danger to public order and security, according to a spokesman.

The Netherlands imposed a similar block on Turkey’s deputy prime minister on Friday.

One year ago, tanks, soldiers and military aircraft descended on Turkey’s main cities in what was apparently an attempt to overthrow the government. The forces were swiftly contained.

Hundreds of thousands of Turks have since been detained or removed from their jobs after being accused of involvement in the action.
