Greenpeace has released what it calls shocking video of the Great Barrier Reef that then environmental group says shows mass coral bleaching for an unprecedented second year running.

Climate change, it says, is fuelling warmer waters off Australia, “cooking the reef alive” in the words of one campaigner.

Bleaching occurs naturally but scientists are concerned that global warming is magnifying the damage, leaving underwater ecosystems unable to recover.

The pictures, taken by a marine biologist, add to evidence already gathered by a Queensland government agency, the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority – and an American scientific body, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

The reef is on an official UNESCO watch list.
