Accumoli was near the epicentre, when the earthquake struck, taking the lives of 11 people in the hilltop village. Its celebrated historical buildings bear witness to the strength of the tremors.

It will take months and huge amounts of investment to restore the popular tourist destination to its former glory. Geological surveys reveal the village sunk by 20cm.

At the town hall, now a tent, Mayor Stefano Petrucci said he is ready to face the challenge, but he says it requires financial assistance from the international community.

In the meantime, teams worked through the rubble to stabilise the remaining structures and to protect valuables, preserving the past to ensure the future.
