Switzerland’s Lara Gut kept her composure to clinch a downhill event at La Thuile in Italy.
The 24-year-old looked in great shape and completed the technical “Franco Berthod” course in an impressive time of 1 minute and 35.57 seconds, enough to seal a hard-fought win.
Fastest in the final training session, Cornelia Hütter, produced a solid final run but eventually had to settle for second place with home favourite Nadia Fanchini completing the podium, over a second further back.
This result sees Gut take the overall World Cup lead, leapfrogging Lindsey Vonn into first place with a 13-point lead over the American, who failed to finish after surprisingly loosing a ski mid-way down.
