The protesters attempted to march to the city’s Piazza Ferretto, where populist leader of anti-immigrant, anti-euro Lega Nord, Matteo Salvini was holding a campaign rally.

Salvini has big ambitions and wants Lega Nord to become the first opposition to prime minister Matteo Renzi’s Partito Democratico.

To grow support, Salvini has chosen to align Lega Nord with extreme-right wing party, Casapound. He is gaining supporters but the also growing is the anger against him.

The demonstration was violent with police shooting blanks to disperse the crowd but there were no injuries.
