Members of the Berlin Philharmonic have still not chosen a new chief conductor despite more than 11 hours of discussions.

The prestigious orchestra is apparently in deadlock over finding a successor to Sir Simon Rattle when he finishes his contract in three year’s time.

The election process has been described as the papal conclave of the music world.

The controversial German conductor Christian Thielemann is reported to be a favourite with some, while others prefer Latvian Andris Nelsons.

British conductor Rattle is leaving to join the London Symphony Orchestra.
