German Chancellor Angela Merkel responded to France’s official findings taken from the voice recorder of Germanwings flight 4U9525 with a brief statement in Berlin.

Merkel said: “This news touches me — as it probably will most people — and it goes beyond what we can imagine. The federal government and the German authorities will do their utmost to support the investigation. We owe this to all the people who lost their lives in this catastrophe on Tuesday, and to their families who are suffering so horribly.”

She called it a terrible burden for the victims’ relatives that the crash appeared not to have been an accident.
