At least 35 people have been killed and 42 others injured in a stampede during New Year’s celebrations in Shanghai.

According to China’s official television station CCTV, the crush occured on the Bund, a waterfront area in the centre of the city, as crowds poured into Chen Yi Square.

A massive rescue and first aid operation is currently taking place.
