People are still laying floral tributes to the victims of the Sydney siege. The Martin Place shrine has now spread to a second site nearby to protect the crime scene at the Lindt Cafe.

Meanwhile a debate is continuing over how to stop similar attacks in the future and whether recently passed security laws are sufficient.

Hostage taker Man Haron Monis, a self-styled Muslim cleric who received political asylum from Iran in 2001, was well known to Australian authorities. He had been charged as an accessory to murder and had dozens of counts of sexual and indecent assault, yet was free on bail.
