An update to a free Google app helped drive it to the top of Apple's App Store download chart this weekend.

An update to Google’s Arts and Culture app helped it become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s App Store this weekend in the US.

Despite being around since 2016, a newly-added feature allows users to match their selfies to a catalogue of famous paintings.

The software uses computer-vision technology to find similarities between peoples’ photos and artworks shared by over 1,200 museums, galleries and institutions. But users will have to take a fresh selfie with the app as photo uploads from the camera roll are not supported (yet).

Fall Out Boy star Pete Wentz and US actress Felicia Day hopped on the bandwagon this weekend and shared their matches on Twitter.

The update also allows users to examine famous artworks in detail, take virtual tours of museums and browse artworks by time and colour. Art buffs can also snap pictures in select galleries with the ‘Art Recogniser’ feature, which will bring up information about the exhibit.
