Van driver killed after migrants block Calais road with huge tree trunks

A van driver has been killed after migrants dragged several huge tree trunks onto a motorway near the French port of Calais.

His Polish-registered van burst into flames when it crashed into a truck that braked suddenly to avoid the roadblock.

Nine Eritrean migrants were arrested after French authorities found them hiding in one of the trucks halted by the tree trunks.

Many migrants congregate on motorways or along the rail line that goes through the Channel Tunnel, trying to hide in the back of trucks, or stowaway on trains.

Migrants regularly try to stop trucks bound for Britain via Calais by dragging objects onto the road, forcing the trucks to stop. They often hide in the cargo section of trucks bound for Britain.

One police source said there had been an increase in such incidents in recent weeks.
