The European People’s Party has appointed Italian Antonio Tajani to be its candidate for the European Parliament’s presidency.

The former European commissioner, who was up against Mairead McGuinness and Alain Lamassoure, was elected as the group’s nominee to replace current president Martin Schultz.

The German speaker of the European Parliament announced last month he would not seek a third term in 2017.
