US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin have agreed in a telephone conversation to try to mend ties between their two countries .

According to the Kremlin both admitted relations were currently “unsatisfactory” and vowed to work together to improve them.

It was not made clear who had initiated the phone call.

In a statement the Kremlin said the two discussed combining efforts in the fight against terrorism and talked of meeting at a later date.

Relations between Washington and Moscow have soured in recent years, despite President Obama initially calling for a “reset”.

During his campaign,Trump repeatedly praised Putin as a strong leader and since his election there has been a change in tone from Russia which has been quick to hail the triumph of a “man of the people”.
