‘Turkey will regret it’, said Vladimir Putin. In his annual Presidential Address to the Russian Federal Assembly in Moscow, he expressed surprise at the action by the important trading partner and regional power, saying he doesn’t understand why Turkey decided to shoot down a Russian fighter plane last week near the Syrian-Turkish border.

“Only Allah knows why they did it [Putin stressed the Arabic name for God]. It seems as if Allah decided to punish the ruling clique in Turkey by taking away their brains and sanity.”

The downing of the warplane on Nov. 24 triggered a tense standoff between Russia and NATO member Turkey, and Moscow has imposed a raft of economic sanctions on Ankara in retaliation.
