Ramzan Kadyrov the leader of Chechnya has given his blessing to a police chief who took a 17 year-old-girl as his second wife in a forced marriage.

The police commander Nazhud Guchigov is 46-years-old and already has one wife.

According to the investigative journalist Elena Milashina, of independent newspaper Novaya Gazeta, the family of the bride named as Kheda Goylabiyeva was threatened with “unpleasant consequences” if they did not hand her over to him.

Milashina has fled after reporting the story over fears for her safety the newspaper says.

The Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov is a strong ally of Vladimir Putin but nonetheless supported the wedding despite both polygamy and forced marriage being against Russian law.

Rights groups say the support probably came as a show of support for his security forces.
