The head of an EU-backed anti-corruption watchdog has been detained in Romania. Horia Georgescu is suspected of inflating the value of real estate by 75 million euros in a land scam.

Horia Georgescu was taken in for questioning at the National Anticorruption Department DNA on Monday morning, March 16. After several hours of interrogation, the DNA prosecutors decided to arrest him.

It’s the latest in a string of arrests and convictions of high-ranking officials in Romania, one of the EU’s most corrupt member states.
