Updated:

Portugal prepares for its first general strike in 12 years on Thursday as unions protest labour reforms expected to disrupt transport, schools, hospitals and other services.

Unions plan a nationwide walkout on Thursday, 11 December 2025, to oppose the government's new labour package.

The centre right says it wants to bring more flexibility to the job market, while unions argue the plan weakens key protections, from dismissal rules to support for mothers and women who suffer miscarriages.

Many workers recall similar pressure during the troika years. Some, like Lisbon hygiene worker Nuno Costa, say the current reforms feel like a return to that period. The 24 hour strike is expected to slow public transport, schools, hospitals and airports.
