The Liberal MEP is entering the race to take over as Martin Schulz as the parliament’s speaker.

He faces stiff competition.

Centre-right MEP Antonio Tajani of Italy has thrown his hat into the ring.

The former EU commissioner is close to ex-Italian premier Silvio Berlusconi.

Gianni Pitella, another Italian MEP, is the Socialist candidate for the job.

The voting on who will be the next leader of the parliament takes place on January the 17th at a plenary session in Strasbourg.
