The leader of the European Conservatives and Reformists group in the European Parliament says the UK’s decision to leave the European Union is a “warning shot.”

Speaking at an “English Breakfast” hosted by the ECR in Brussels, British Conservative MEP Syed Kamall, who campaigned in favour of a Brexit, told journalists:

“The EU cannot continue as it is. the EU has to reform. There were people that said: that is just a minority of people, we don’t really believe that way. What we have shown when we have put that argument to the British people – on both sides, and you have the arguments on both sides and you have the counter arguments – the British people have decided to vote to leave. and i think that sent a warning shot.’

Outside the European Parliament there was a sense of shock at the decision by British voters to leave the European Union.

One man said: “It’s now important to keep all countries together and i think it would not be good if we get, more countries leaving the European Union.”

Another man added: “Honestly I think that the British will be more affected than anybody else, but that’s their choice. as long as they assume the consequences. honestly, I think they did a big mistake.’

Euronews correspondent in Brussels, Sandor Zsiros, says that although there was talk about the possibility of Brexit in Brussels for some time, many are surprised by the referendum result. And that one thing is for certain: the EU now enters an unprecedented period.
