Last year saw the highest number of people fleeing their country since World War II. The vast majority found refuge in developing countries – not Europe.
In fact refugees only represent 0.3 percent of the European Union’s total population.
Still Europe has taken in more than one million asylum seekers in 2015 and close to 200,000 so far this year. Most hail from Syria, Iraq and Afghanistan.
One country does stands out: Germany. It has received half a million asylum seekers to date and granted protection to around 150,000 of them.
But is taking in refugees enough? What about helping them learn a new language, find a job, integrate?
In this episode of insiders, we travel to Germany and the Netherlands, both countries who have put in place comprehensive, albeit very different integration packages.
And In Italy, we see that tackling the trauma of exile is also needed to better integrate refugees.
