Can Europe mend the gap between men and women when it comes to pay, pensions and leadership positions?

The European Union scores just 54 points out of 100 in its own gender equality index. To shake things up, the European Parliament recently approved a comprehensive action plan calling on Europe to close the gender gap in pay, pensions and leadership positions. The resolution also supports reproductive rights and calls for more to be done against discrimination and violence against women.

Some parliamentarians oppose the plan, saying it interferes in citizen’s private lives and encourages abortion. Is it too ambitious? And how much power can the parliament really wield on gender equality?

On The Network, a debate between Iratxe Garcia Perez, who chairs the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, Beatrix von Storch, who sits on the committee and is a member of Alternative für Deutschland, and Viviane Teitelbaum, president of the European Women’s Lobby.
