SMEs: what kind of EU support?

Question from Kate , UK:
“I run a small clothing company and would like to expand my business. Does the EU provide financial support to companies like mine?”
Answer by Nina Koudelkova, Communication Officer, Europe Direct:
“Yes, the European Union supports entrepreneurs and businesses with a wide range of EU programmes. These programmes provide loans, guarantees, venture capital or other equity financing, and are especially dedicated to small and medium-sized enterprises.
“EU financial support can help businesses at various stages of development. For example, it can help start or expand a business. It complements public financing schemes from different EU member states.
“If you need a loan, a guarantee or if you are interested in venture capital, you can locate banks or venture capital funds in your country that provide financing supported by the EU through the “Access to Finance” webpage on Your Europe portal.
“You may also benefit from direct EU funding through grants for certain kinds of activities, like research or education. Some of these grant programmes can be relevant for small businesses.
“SMEs can usually apply directly for the programme. The criteria are specified in the call. However, do keep in mind that co-funding is a general rule of such financial aid. This means that the EU can only cover part of the cost of your project.
“For further information on EU funding opportunities, you may get in touch with the nearest Enterprise Europe Network contact point.”
