Some might saaaaay we will find an auction daaay...
The guitar Noel Gallagher played when writing Oasis’ acclaimed second album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ is going up for auction.
The signed Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic guitar is being sold via Sotheby’s, along with a handwritten lyric sheet for ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, and a Rickenbacker 12-string model used by Gallagher for a decade.
The guitar is estimated to fetch between £45,000 and £60,000 (€51,000 and €69,000).
Online bidding for the auction opens tomorrow.
Craig Inciardi, Sotheby’s New York-based pop culture specialist, told The Guardian that the model is a “holy grail” for fans: “These are functional objects that have become so sought after and the value of musical instruments that have this sort of historic provenance has significantly increased over time.”
Gallagher gave the guitar to a roadie, who sold it to the person now putting it on sale.
“He is a huge Oasis fan,” Inciardi explained. “He was in the social circles of people who were around the band at the time.”
The guitar has even more value considering ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?’ is considered as one of Oasis’ best albums – if not their greatest. It features numerous classics such as ‘Roll With It’, ‘Wonderwall’, ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’, ‘Some Might Say’, ‘She’s Electric’ and ‘Champagne Supernova’.
The album sold 350,000 copies in its first week, and went on to become the best-selling British album of the 90s.
Since its 1995 release, more than 22 million copies of the LP have been sold worldwide – on par with Fugees’ 'The Score' and Michael Jackson’s 'HIStory: Past, Present and Future, Book I'.
