Baku is strengthening its position on the global sporting stage as it prepares for its role as World Sports Capital in 2026. With more than 200 sports facilities built across the country, the capital continues to host major international competitions and multi-sport events. The calendar includes global forums, world championships and flagship events such as Formula 1.
Authorities say participation is growing, with women now accounting for around 40% of athletes at major competitions. Alongside elite sport, Azerbaijan is expanding youth engagement, social inclusion and volunteer programmes, reinforcing Baku’s reputation as a trusted international sporting partner.
