From the AI-driven conservation of China’s Dazu Rock Carvings to the Rijksmuseum’s transparent restoration of Rembrandt’s Night Watch, China and Europe are embracing a new model of preservation.

In Chongqing, researchers are using sub-millimetre 3D scans, holographic records and AI modelling to analyse and safeguard the Dazu Rock Carvings, overcoming structural obstacles to document every contour of the thousand-year-old grottoes. An 8K immersive dome now brings the sculptures to the public while reducing pressure on the site itself.

In Amsterdam, the Rijksmuseum is removing aged varnish from Rembrandt’s Night Watch under full public scrutiny, supported by microscopic imaging and material analysis.
