The creme de la creme of fashion turned out in force for the opening of Milan Fashion Week at the Palazzo Reale. Even prime minister Matteo Renzi was there, a first for such an event.

Among the first labels on show was Roberto Cavalli. It was art nouveau meets Janis Joplin for this latest collection by Peter Dundas, which remains firmly rooted in the Sixties and Seventies rock’n‘roll era.

The languid looks were strong on glamour and workmanship, especially in the beautiful beaded evening dresses. Tiger print was omnipresent, from long skirts to short jackets, and looks were completed with long scarves tied casually around the neck.

Elegance and femininity were the order of the day on Blugirl’s runway.

High neck ruffles and delicate lace put a fresh spin on the Elizabethan era, with one model embodying the look from top to toe in a black lace dress, complete with a high collar and a sheer slip. Woolen white tights and pink fluffy shoes finished off the outfits.

And as one reporter put it, Alessandro Michele’s latest Gucci collection was a triumph of joyous colour and eccentricity.

In the year-plus since he took over as creative director, Michele has made pretty and frilly a centerpiece of the Gucci wardrobe, and this collection, with its eccentric and delicious juxtapositions, was no exception.
