For women to have the right to vote in the UK a group of women suffered the brutality of the authorities and the contempt of a part of society. Sarah Gavron the British director tells the story of these unsung heroes.

The action in “Suffragette” takes place in the early twentieth century. A working group organises peaceful campaigns to demand the right to vote for women. Despite several promises, the government did not agree to amend the law. Newspapers ignored the controversy and activists started to take more violent action.

The film shows the social context marking the era of suffragettes. At the beginning of the century in the United Kingdom, fathers had total authority over their children and could take the children from their mothers.

In a classic style, with great actresses such as Carey Mulligan and Meryl Streep, the film depicts all the tension and the violence of an episode which was a milestone in the history of the twentieth century.
