So what is love? Greek director Yorgos Lanthimos asks the question in his film ‘The Lobster’. And he does so in a rather strange manner.
The film is set in a society where celibacy has become a crime: you must find your soul mate or else… Our hero, a portly Colin Farrell, checks into a hotel room. He has 45 days to find the one for him.
If he fails to, he will be transformed into the animal of his choice – in this case a lobster because lobsters live long and have boundless sexual energy.
In the meantime, deep in the woods, a resistance movement is growing against this social order, where you can’t take the risk of loving or being loved.
An excellent film, which won the Jury Prize in Cannes, ‘The Lobster’ is beautifully shot using the natural light of a stunning and eery Irish countryside.
Besides Colin Farrel, the star-studded cast also includes Rachel Weisz, John C. Reilly and Léa Seydoux.
With a chilling sense of humour, the film offers a credible journey into a world where romance is all but dead.
With Yorgos Lanthimos, love is a serious affair, much too serious to be treated lightly. We hope you enjoy the movie, see you next week.
