Charlize Theron’s latest movie, the thriller ‘Dark Places’, has opened in the United States.

I kind of loved playing a character that was so stunted and stopped growing up. Just lived off the charity of people because she was so infamous. She had no life. She was just expecting a check to come every month and that that would take care of her and that's so not me and I was so interested to go in and explore that

The South African actress plays Libby Day who was just a child when her family was brutally murdered in their Kansas farmhouse. The sole survivor of the massacre, she testified in court against her own brother, who was jailed.

Twenty-five years later, Day agrees to revisit the crime and uncover the truths that led up to that tragic night.

“I kind of loved playing a character that was so stunted and stopped growing up,” explains Theron. “Just lived off the charity of people because she was so infamous. She had no life. She was just expecting a check to come every month and that that would take care of her and that’s so not me and I was so interested to go in and explore that,” said Theron at the Los Angeles premiere.

Theron herself saw her own mother shoot dead her abusive alcoholic father at the age of 15.

The actress also produced the movie, which is based on the best-selling novel of the same name by US author Gillian Flynn: “She is incredibly funny,” said Flynn about working with Theron. “She is extremely sharp and she is very chilled. She knows movies. She’s been in this business for a long time at a very high level and she knows what she is talking about, so it was a real pleasure.”

While Flynn’s second big screen adaptation has been praised for its strong cast, it has been branded a relative disappointment compared to last year’s Oscar-nominated ‘Gone Girl’.

‘Dark Places’ is on global release now.
