Hamburg has seen more protests against the G20 summit: the one on Saturday afternoon was peaceful, with marchers condemning the previous night’s violence.

Radical anti-capitalists were present amid fears of further trouble, and some scuffles were reported.

But tens of thousands took part calmly in the demonstration against the world’s rich countries and the politics of certain leaders.

“I am here to express my protest. This (the G20) is an elitist club, among them the biggest weapons exporters, the most powerful countries which are essentially involved in turning the world into what it is,” said one male protester.

Shop owners and residents in one neighbourhood surveyed the damage after stores were looted and cars torched on Friday.

“Of course I condemn such violence and they don’t belong to a demonstration. We are peaceful here. We are from the Left party and we reject these radical attitudes, no matter what side they may come from,” said another man.

The head of Hamburg police has said he was shocked by the “wave of destructive anger” unleashed in Friday’s violence.

Over three days more than 200 officers have been injured and more than 120 people detained.

Germany’s Chancellor Merkel condemned the violence and brutality against police.
