Russian strikes on the southeastern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhzhia overnight on Tuesday killed at least two people and injured 18, officials said.

According to Ivan Fedorov, Zaporizhzhia's regional governor, two children, including a four-year-old, were among the injured.

The overnight attack came in a series of at least 10 strikes that hit the city, sparking massive fires that damaged homes and property, Ukraine's State Emergency Service (SES) reported.

Images released by SES showed firefighters battling the massive fires in private homes and other buildings, as well as on a transport truck.

Ukraine's air force confirmed the attack, saying Russia fired 10 multiple launch rocket system (MLRS) shells, thought to be Tornado-S rockets, toward Zaporizhzhia.

Since launching its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in early 2022, Russia has occupied a part of Zaporizhzhia region and has been shelling and bombarding the rest of the region.

The near-daily attacks on the city have caused dozens of deaths and casualties, if not more.

Meanwhile, local officials in the northern city of Sumy reported that a series of Russian strikes carried out around 2:30 am local time (1:30 am CEST) temporarily knocked out power across the city.

According to Governor Oleh Hryhorov, Russian drones struck twice overnight, hitting non-residential areas.
